Chapter 7

Tala sipped her drink while watching Craig fumble through the kitchenette. She couldn’t believe she’d told the stupid story of Owl. Although it was still a favorite, she wondered if he really enjoyed it or if he was marking time until he could take her to bed again. He’d never seemed interested in her heritage the last time around. Then again, she hadn’t been willing to open up and share it with him, only used it as a crutch so she wouldn’t have to make a decision that would hurt everyone involved. Regardless, sharing something personal from her past now felt right.

Fleeting glimpses of his bare thighs teased her as he moved. Every so often, the robe would fall open and his magnificent chest would come into view. She held her breath until he adjusted the robe, at which time she let the air whoosh from her lungs in a disappointed blast.

“Is there something wrong with your respiratory tract?” He smiled as he stirred the soppy egg goo in a cast-iron skillet. “Or are you overheating under all those covers?”

The meaty aroma of bacon filled the air, followed by the scent of toasting bread. “You’re making bacon?”

“Yup. If you don’t want to eat it, I will.”

“I’ll eat it sometimes. Besides, bacon’s not red meat. You know, the pig, the other white meat?”

He grinned over his shoulder, an act that deepened her flush. “Having a hot flash?”

She finished her champagne and rested the flute on a bedside table. “Can you blame me for having a meltdown? There’s a hot, almost naked man in the kitchen of my honeymoon cabin, feeding me and plying me with champagne. I’ve never been so pampered.”

“I try.” He gave his attention to the skillet. “What’s a birth animal?”

Wow, he had a one-track mind. “It’s the Native American version of an astrology sign. The universe gives us the animal that can be the best guide. My birthday is March first, so my birth animal is a wolf.” She shrugged. “My mother says it suits my spirit.”

“Why?” Craig brandished a pair of metal tongs and removed several strips of bacon from a skillet on the back burner. He laid them on a plate lined with a paper towel, then turned the burner off.

Tala threw off the quilt and sheets, crawling to the side of the bed, debating whether she wanted to touch her feet to the chilled hardwood. “Wolves love freedom, as do I. Being in nature makes me happy. People having the sign of the wolf are said to easily trust others and are generous in their feelings toward those they love.”

“And?” He scraped a mound of fluffy scrambled eggs onto another plate. One flick of his wrist dialed the burner knob into the off position. When he lifted a golden brow, her stomach fluttered.

“Those born with the wolf strive to find and keep love in their life.” Every time he smiled at her, spirals of heat trailed through her insides to tickle between her thighs. “This knowledge is a part of me.
